UI Health Precision Medicine Program

UI Health, Personalized Medicine Program

One of the few of its kind in the country, the Precision Medicine Program at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System (UI Health) is a novel multidisciplinary service in partnership with the UIC Department of Pathology Molecular Pathology Laboratory that involves genotyping for cardiovascular medications, in conjunction with a clinical pharmacogenomics consult service, to assist with genotype interpretation and genotype-guided medication management.

The UI Health PMP was nationally recognized by the ASHP Foundation/Cardinal Health Foundation as a Finalist for the 2015 Award for Medication-Use Safety for its impact on:

Reducing anticoagulation-related 30-day readmissions (77% lower)
Reducing anticoagulation-related 90-day readmissions (68% lower)
Estimated annualized medical cost savings (approximately $600,000/year, $2000/patient)

The Precision Medicine Program continues to explore the expansion of gene-drug pairs it provides guidance on in real-world clinical settings. Currently, it provides genotype-guided drug therapy recommendations for the following drugs:

Clopidogrel – CYP2C19
Warfarin – CYP2C9, VKORC1, CYP4F2
