Faculty Represent Department in Asia

Pre-Conference

Drs. John Shilka and Daphne Smith Marsh traveled to Hong Kong to participate in the 23rd Asian Conference on Clinical Pharmacy.
They, with Dr. Alan Lau, led a 4-hour workshop pre-conference, with materials that were developed specifically for the conference. The title of the workshop was “Contemporary Comprehensive Care of Diabetes Patients”, and topics included pharmacotherapy advances for diabetes mellitus, CGM counseling/interpretation, and optimal blood pressure control/lipid management for cardiovascular risk reduction.
This workshop was an interactive discussion with patient cases, and they were able to provide CGM demo kits for the attendees to review. The workshop was well received by the pharmacists and pharmacy student participants.
Conference

Additionally, Daphne and John both presented presentations at the main conference.
John presented on the potential pharmacoeconomic impact of CGMs in the Asia Pacific region during the “Plenary Lecture Session I: Advancing Healthcare Horizons with Data” session.
Daphne presented on CKM syndrome in diabetes during the “Symposium IIb: Multidisciplinary Services” session.
Both were also asked to provide input during Dr. Alan Lau’s presentation where they assisted during the interactive discussion about their experiences in primary care.
Preceptor Conference

Before heading home, Daphne and John were invited speakers for a Preceptor Conference held in Indonesia. The title of the conference was “Attaining excellence in teaching practice and clinical skills” and Daphne and John discussed practice in the US while also providing clinical preceptor pearls. During the presentation, John and Daphne also held an interactive discussion in which they compared how they may approach patients differently based on their clinical experiences.
The preceptor conference had approximately 150 attendees from over 60 colleges of pharmacy in Indonesia.
Hospital

While in Indonesia, John and Daphne were also able to visit two hospitals as well. During their visit, the hospitals provided presentations that included introductions and details about pharmacy internship programs and discussions were shared to improve learning experiences during the internships.
Reconnect

Daphne and John were able to reconnect with the visiting pharmacists from Hong Kong who spent time in their respective clinics in the Spring of 2024.
